Singing Moses
Exodus 15
Sometimes there are specific images that come to mind when we think of famous people. When I think of former President George W. Bush, what comes to mind is when he stood at Ground Zero a few days after the 9/11 attacks, with a fireman by his side, speaking to the grieving workers using a bullhorn. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that image.
With Bible characters, there’s probably different images we have. When we think of Jonah, it’s probably him sitting inside a big fish. With David, it’s on the battlefield with a slingshot fighting Goliath. And with Jesus, it’s hanging on a cross for our sins.
How about Moses? What image comes to mind? Standing with his staff as the Red Sea parts would probably be one. Exodus 15 gives us an image of Moses, which I’m guessing many of us haven’t had. Standing before the people leading worship. Who knows, maybe he even used his staff to direct the people in singing.
Singing Moses. I love that image. God gives the people a great victory and Moses responds in exuberant singing before the Lord and the people. What a great example for us to follow. Jesus tells us in John 4:24, “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” We are to be passionate in worship and we are to be accurate in worship. Are we both? Looking at the song Moses sang, we see four truth-filled descriptions of God that should cause us to passionately worship Him.
#1 God is victorious (vs. 1-21). As both Moses and his sister Miriam put it, “He has triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider he has thrown into the sea.” How has God given you victory over sin? Give Him thanks. How do you need victory in your life? Ask Him for it.
#2 God is holy (v. 11). To be holy is to be “set apart.” As Moses put it: “Who is like you, O LORD, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?” What are some things about God that set Him apart? Take time and give Him praise for them. What are some awesome deeds He’s done in your life lately? Take time and thank Him.
#3 God is loving (v. 13). Moses sings this about God, “You have led in your steadfast love the people whom you have redeemed; you have guided them by your strength to your holy abode.” The Hebrew word for the phrase “steadfast love” is hesed. It means God’s continuously loving kindness toward us. Aren’t you thankful God’s love isn’t conditional on our perfection? He shows His loving kindness even when we don’t deserve it. Why not take a few minutes and sing songs about His love toward you.
#4 God is eternal (v. 18). Moses sang that “The LORD will reign forever and ever.” Guess what that means? So will we, who know Him. Now that’s worth celebrating. A lifetime in glory with God where we will never sin, or cry, or feel pain. A perfect paradise. Our true “Promise Land.” Sing in celebration of God this week.
