Come Follow Me Day 38

Day 38 “Insignificant”

Devotional:

Sometimes small towns can have a big impact on history. Kitty Hawk, North Carolina only has about 3,000 people. But it was the site of the first flight by a powered airplane. Dahlonega, Georgia has just 6,500 residents. But it was where the American gold rush began, when a deer hunter tripped over a rock and discovered that it was gold. And then there’s Lexington, Massachusetts, a town of about 30,000. It was here that the first shots of the Revolutionary War took place.

Bethsaida was a town that meant “house of hunting/fishing.” It was a small fishing village on the coast of the Sea of Galilee. Yet big things happened here. It was the birthplace of Peter and his brother Andrew, and Philip. Seven miracles were performed there. One of them being the healing of the blind man from today’s passage. This certainly isn’t the only example of big things happening in small places.

The most significant of all was Bethlehem. In the days of Jesus, the population was 1,435. But it was the birth of “1” that made this the most significant place on earth. It was the birthplace of Jesus. What bigger event could happen than that? Jesus loved to do the significant in the insignificant. That should be good news to us.

If you are feeling insignificant, you are a prime candidate of seeing the significant happen. Look at the ragtag resume of the disciples… fishermen, a corrupt tax collector, a political zealot, among others. Yet they were part of the most significant events in history. They would go on to have a significant impact in the history of Christendom. God delights in doing the significant through the insignificant.

Take the man from today’s passage. He was an unknown blind man, living in a little known town. But he had friends and family who loved him and brought him to Jesus. And Jesus healed the man. And here we are 2,000 years later talking about it. That’s what can happen when Jesus touches our lives. When we allow Him to have all of us. When we believe by faith that God can do great things in our lives.

Feeling insignificant? Perfect, you are ready for a significant impact. Paul says in 1 Corinthians 1:27, “God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong.” People can only come to Christ when they come humbly. God wants to use us to help people do that. And He uses the “foolish” and the “weak.” Let God have all of you, no matter how insignificant you may feel. If He did it back then, He can do it today.

Prayer:

Offer up a simple prayer to God today… “God, take my insignificant life and doing something significant for your glory and for the good of your kingdom. Amen."
