Day 6: 7,000
Scripture: Exodus 6
As a kid I remember when I wanted to convince my parents that I was really going to do something I would always say "I promise.” Unfortunately, my promises weren't very compelling to them in light of how often I didn't keep them.
I want to give you a number that should be a source of great encouragement, especially if you are going through some challenges. It's the number 7,000. That's how many promises God has given us in the Bible. (Well, 7,487 to be precise.)
A promise can be defined as "a declaration or assurance that one will do a particular thing or that a particular thing will happen.” Promises are pretty easy to define but sometimes hard to keep. We've all been guilty of not following through on a promise. All of us except God, that is.
Since we don't have room for all the promises of God from the Bible, let me give you just a few…
“It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed” (Deuteronomy 31:8).
“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19).
“For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39).
Boy, if those verses don’t encourage you, I don’t know what will! When you feel discouraged, lean into the promises of God. This principle would be important for Moses. He faced many obstacles in leading the people in the wilderness. But God never gave up on him. God, time and time again, gave promises to Moses.
In Exodus 6, we see a number of these promises. God promises to lead the people out (v. 1). God promises to keep His covenant with Moses and the people just as He had with their forefathers (vs. 2-8). And again, God promises to lead the people out of slavery (v. 13).
Perhaps the promises look different, but what promises do you need to lean on today? Our God is a “Yes” God! He is for us, not against us. He is the perfect promise-keeper. Let these words from 2 Corinthians 1:20 soak in, “For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.”
